This piece takes inspiration from the Disdyakis Tricontrahedron – a polyhedron with 120 faces. The 120 faces have both literal meaning in places like groups of 10 measures of 12/8 and the 240 measures in the piece, and figurative meaning in the flexibility in which 120 as a number is, being two times the flexibility of base 60, which played into the flexibility of the piece. The name refers to these 120 faces (six score being six times twenty). But on top of that, I liked how the pentagons are separated into 2 groups of 6, and the pentagons themselves are bisected. I thought the metaphor of “an object that sees one ending equating to another, equally important beginning” was apt for the completion of a Masters degree; Thus, the middle of the piece includes a false ending, and we tour back through the sections in different ways. They also might follow the triumphs and challenges one might face during and after one’s college career. Or it could be just a fun theme and variations… You decide!
